No parent wants to think that a fire could put his or her child’s life in danger. However, as frightening as that thought is, fire is a very real danger in Danbury, CT. It can be very important to consider how to prepare your child to escape from a fire if necessary. Here are three tips to help you educate your child about kids safety during a home fire.
1. Teach Them How To Fire Crawl
Your child should understand how to move around in a fire. The most common fire crawl is to get down on your hands and knees like a baby, lower your forearms to the ground and crawl with your face toward the ground.
If the air is too hot to have your backside up, another common fire crawl is to crawl on your belly, with your legs against the ground.
2. Explain How To Check Doors for Heat
Another thing you can do to promote kids safety is to show your child to how to check the heat of doors. Instruct your child to press his or her hand against any closed door before opening it. If it is cool to the touch, the door can be opened slowly and carefully. If the door is hot, your child should not open the door.
3. Review Your Fire Escape Plan
Once you have made your escape plan, practice it with your child. Make sure your child knows that once he or she has gotten out of the house, he or she is not to go back inside for any reason. Not even if other loved ones are still in the house, not under any circumstance. Designate a meeting place outside of your house where your child should go after escaping the fire.
It can be overwhelming to create a kids safety plan in case of a fire. Following these tips can help ensure that your child stays protected should a fire occur.
