Four Tips for Preparing to Safely Ride Out
Realizing that a storm big enough to be called a nor’easter is blowing your way can be worrisome. Seeing one on the weather map can be downright ominous. Prepare for hurricane-force winds, heavy snow, rainfall, flooding, or any combination. Nor’easter facts show that these storms can actually do more damage than a hurricane itself. That’s because these titan storms are much bigger and slower. If you see one on radar, prepare to hunker down for a few days. Here are four tips for preparing to safely ride it out:
1. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Nor’easters can last a while. Non-perishable food and drinking water are a must. Store enough for at least three days. Air-tight containers are advised. Remember to include a can opener and eating utensils. Prepare for the unlikely accident by including first aid supplies, including pain relievers (e.g., aspirin). Also, remember to add to your kit prescription medications, as well as other medical necessities (e.g., diabetic supplies).
2. Plan for a Power Outage
Power outages are common during storms, especially a big storm like a nor’easter. Fully charge cell phones and other electronics when you hear the first warnings. Keep extra batteries on hand. Also, bright all-weather flashlights and portable radios are strongly recommended.
3. Prepare Car
Fill the gas tank before the storm arrives. An emergency trip might be needed during the storm. Gas stations often close or run out of gas during these events. If you go out during the storm there’s a chance that you could get stuck due to snow drifts or flooding. Much like your home, an emergency kit is recommended for your vehicle, as well as blankets and plenty of water and snacks.
4. Prepare for Waterproofing
Sandbags and plywood could come in very useful during flooding and/or extremely high winds. Keep them easily accessible so that you can quickly install them before the storm arrives.
